Graduate Record Examination (GRE) – General Test is a standard test and is an eligibility criterion for a large number of educational institutions in the US, Canada, and many other countries to admit foreign students in their respective courses of study at graduate level. GRE does not assess candidate’s potential in any one subject of study as it evaluates quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, analytical writing skills, and critical thinking skills in general.

In verbal reasoning, candidate’s ability to examine and assess written material, relationships among component parts of sentences as well as identify relationships between words and concepts is evaluated.

In quantitative reasoning, candidate’s ability to understand basic concepts of geometry, algebra, data analysis, and arithmetic; conclude quantitatively; and find solutions in a quantitative setting, is evaluated.

In analytical writing, candidate’s ability to present complex ideas in a simple and effective format; study claims and evidence; endorse ideas with relevant points and examples; maintain a well-focused and logical discussion; and control the elements of standard written English.

GRE is created and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS) since 1949. Potential graduate aspirants can attempt GRE thrice in a year in the months of October, November, and April. GRE scores helps admission and fellowship panels to compare the aspirants’ qualifications and evaluate the grades and recommendations to study at graduate level.

GRE, a computer-based test is also offered as a paper-based test in those regions of the world where computer-based testing is not feasible. The scores are well-accepted globally in any graduate/professional school, or fellowship granting organization.

In addition to GRE General Test, GRE Subject Tests are also conducted by ETS, including Mathematics, Psychology, Physics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology, Literature in English, and Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology. These GRE Subject Tests are paper-based tests only, unlike GRE General Test. These tests are conducted by the admitting institute if the candidate has a strong base in any of these above mentioned subjects.

Now some of the business schools have also started considering GRE scores in lieu of Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) to encourage undergraduate aspirants for admissions in business degree programs straight after college.
